Hollywood/Wilshire Health Council

HISTORY
The Hollywood Community Health Council (HW CHC) evolved out of the Coalition for Quality Health Care. The Coalition was convened by CHC. It formed in 1997 to respond to the sale of the non-profit Queen of Angels - Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center to Tenet Healthcare Corporation. The Coalition organized around mobilizing community residents and CBOs to advocate for public input in the sale of the non-profit community hospital and to discuss the sale's implications on community access to healthcare and services.

After it was sold in June 1998, the Coalition continued to monitor the Tenet-owned Queen of Angels Hospital and the QueensCare Foundation formed with revenue from the sale. The Coalition initiated an extensive community nomination process to identify and appoint four community leaders to Tenet's Community Advisory Board. The Coalition also organized several meetings with the Tenet CEO and the QueensCare Board of Directors to discuss changes in operations and services and to safeguard community representation through board structure.

In January 1999, community leaders and Coalition representatives remained committed to monitoring the impact of the Hospital's sale on health access for the community. The Coalition also expressed a desire to look at the broader concerns and issues that affected the health and access to health services for residents in the Hollywood-Wilshire community. This then became the nucleus for the formation of the HW CHC.

MISSION STATEMENT:
To improve the health and wellness of individuals and communities in Hollywood-Wilshire through education, prevention, and advocacy efforts. The Council will particularly focus on responding to the healthcare and access issues of diverse immigrant neighborhoods.

AREAS OF FOCUS:

  • Increasing access to comprehensive services and coverage for immigrants, including undocumented and new immigrant populations
  • Increasing cultural & linguistically appropriate care and access to care
  • Increasing preventative dental and vision care
  • Enhancing the availability and access to clinics that provide care to low-income and uninsured individuals

CURRENT PROJECTS
Cultural and Linguistic Competency Assessment Survey - Council members developed and implemented a survey that measured cultural and linguistic competency. The survey was sent to more than 25 departments throughout Los Angeles County's Department of Health Services. The next step was to distribute the survey to QueensCare funded hospitals.
